1. Poor Installation
Unlike central air conditioning units, ductless mini splits don't require ducts. Homeowners often view this as an avenue to test their DIY skills only to experience problems in the future. You need the correct setup to get the cost efficiency and reliability that ductless mini splits are famed for. If not, you will be handling issues such as water leaks, electrical problems, impaired performance, and high-energy consumption.
2. Oversized Unit
Bigger isn't always better. Oversized mini-split units can quickly become problematic due to issues such as short cycling. This could be why your air conditioning unit is stuck in a start-up cycle loop.
You can resolve short cycling by changing the filters regularly. However, when it's caused by oversizing, a cooling system overhaul is necessary. Replacing the cooling system should restore it to full efficiency.

4. Compressor Distress

5. Clogged Condensate Line
Water is a byproduct of your ductless mini-split extracting heat from the air. The amount of water is too little to turn heads, so it's easy to overlook this problem. However, a clogged condensate line can lead to water accumulation that damages any metallic parts in your ductless mini-split.
Water causes rust, which reduces the lifespan of your air conditioning system. Ultimately, you will replace your ductless mini-split before the expected date.
A clogged condensate line can also accumulate water leading to drain pan overflow. If the overflowing water spills, it can damage your electronics or drywall. It can also contribute to mold growth; thus, causing health problems to your family.
If your ductless mini-split has a clogged condensate line, investigate the cause immediately. In most cases, these clogs are associated with dirt, pet hair, or dust. You can dislodge the clog using a thin jet of water or stick. Alternatively, regular AC maintenance should prevent these clogs.
